Empowering Communication & Confidence Through Functional Language Intervention
Individual
Overview
- Client: Ms K (Female, 28 years old)
- Location: Clinic-based intervention
- User Type: Speech-Language Pathologist & Adult Client (Social Communication & Language Goals)
- Timeframe: Ongoing (attending 2 x 30-minute sessions per week)
Opportunity
The client presents with challenges in initiating and maintaining conversations, summarising information, including personal experiences, and developing her economic participation through employment, higher education and skill development (e.g. driving). There was a need for structured language and social communication intervention to support the client to be more independent in her daily life.
Goals
- Initiate and maintain conversations with others (e.g. asking questions)
- Summarising information
- Reflecting on personal experiences
- Write and submit applications (e.g. CVs, cover letters, TAFE courses)
Solutions
The client attended regular speech pathology clinic sessions supported by the Kinephonics® Assistive Technology platform. Therapy targeted both social and functional communication skills for her daily life.
Key features used
- Entrainment Tool (Mirror, K button, text box): Supported modelling and playback for practice and self-evaluation of written answers through audio feedback.
- Content Library: Tasks focusing on summarising experiences, personal reflections, job-readiness activities, and conversation strategies.
- Personalised Content: Tasks were created to facilitate CV and cover letter writing, to support employment and higher education applications.
- Review Space: The client recorded, listened to, and edited her written and spoken responses, building awareness and confidence.
- Village: Content was shared between sessions and used collaboratively while travelling (e.g. as a travel diary to share life updates with the therapist). The client’s family also has access to the platform and can view her progress.
Results
- Independently applied for and secured a job, successfully completing onboarding and training
- Independently completed a TAFE course application to obtain additional tertiary education.
- Demonstrated improved summarisation of information, including personal experiences and fictional narratives (e.g. TV shows, daily routines)
- Improved ability to ask questions and initiate and maintain conversation during sessions
- Greater independence and self-reflection during writing and speaking tasks.
- Continuity of practice as the client independently used the platform while overseas, receiving clinician feedback following each video session.
Outputs
Insights & Learnings
- Real-world relevance and functional application enhanced engagement and self-motivation as the client completed job and TAFE applications independently at home.
- Review and playback features supported editing, reflective skills, and self-correction across a range of activities, including personal recounts, narratives and employment applications.
- The ability to continue practising during travel promotes independence and agency as the client controls when and how they use the platform.
- Using assistive tools alongside traditional speech pathology intervention provided a digital record of the client’s progress.
- The platform tracks a client’s body movement and the readability score of the content in the text box. This provides additional insight and metrics into how the client develops over time and across different session goals and outcomes.
